Why were they named Flamingos?

The name was given to the birds by Latin Americans. Their dictionary has the word "flamma" meaning "fire." The plumage of these birds really looks like fire - just as bright.
There is a legend according to which the mythical bird "phoenix" was reborn into a fiery flamingo.
Flamingos are the oldest species of birds on earth.

Where do flamingos live?

Flamingos are waterfowl and therefore live in and around lagoons and lakes. These bodies of water are usually salty or alkaline.  Flamingos appeared in places with hot, humid climates -Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Large and small flamingos live in Africa. 
Greater flamingos can also be found in the Middle East and India.

Why does a flamingo stand on one leg?

Flamingos live in shallow water and spend a lot of time standing on one leg. This keeps the birds warm by standing in cold water.
By standing on one leg and periodically changing it to the other, flamingos reduce muscle fatigue. Standing on two legs, birds get tired more than standing on one.
Flamingos stand on one or both legs to eat but sleep on one leg.
Flamingos support body weight on one leg without using muscles.

What do flamingos look like?

Flamingo birds have a unique body structure and plumage color.
Flamingos are sociable wading birds, usually 90 to 150 centimeters tall with a barrel-shaped belly and a long, strongly arched neck.
Birds move on long stilt legs. The color scheme includes shades of pink - from white to burgundy.

The legs of most bird species are yellow. Flight feathers and beak tip are black.

The head of a flamingo is small with a large massive beak, strongly curved downward in the middle part.

How long do Flamingos live?

The average lifespan of a flamingo in nature is 40 years. Life expectancy in an artificial environment is over 60 years.
